NEW FACES & NEW PLACES ON CAMPUS

Katie Botha • August 30, 2021

At the end of the last school year, we said farewell to staff retirees, Mrs. Peebles, Mrs. Tuskey and Mrs. Mazur. Staff departures from last year include Middle School Teacher, Lori Valdepenas (now Library Media Specialist at St. Bridget’s), After School Director, Ms. Willoughby (now working in Athletic Training), and JK Teacher, Mrs. Ann Woods Byrne (now spending time at home with her young family).

These staffing changes plus strong enrollment have brought about a little bit of internal movement as well as the addition of several new faces to our Monarch family! We are thrilled to welcome the following faculty and staff members to these new roles and look forward to their professional contributions to our school community.

Mary Jordan – [top row, far left] Mrs. Jordan officially joined Saint Mary’s in mid-July as our new Assistant Principal. Her administrative oversight will span several key areas including our Middle School IB Middle Years Programme, Athletics, Safety, PTO and Service.

Jackie Boehling – [top row, 2nd photo] Ms. Boehling has moved from teaching 1st grade to teaching our littlest Monarchs in JK.

Clair Carpenter – [top row, 3rd photo] Mrs. Carpenter is our new Kindergarten Teacher having come to Saint Mary’s after teaching in Richmond Public Schools.

Cinnamon Langley – [top row, far right] Ms. Langley is our new School Counselor from Commonwealth Catholic Charities. She will work with students at Saint Mary’s from Wednesday – Friday each week.

Allison Krause – [2nd row, far left] Mrs. Krause is our new After School Care (ASC) Director. She and her husband recently relocated to Virginia from New York.

Zach Flint – [2nd row, 2nd photo] Mr. Flint is a familiar face at Saint Mary’s and will continue to serve as an Instructional & Facilities Assistant in addition to his new role as ASC Coordinator.

Denise Heaton – [2nd row, 3rd photo] Mrs. Heaton has joined the ASC team as an After School Care Aide.

Kaki Patterson – [2nd row, far right] Ms. Patterson is our new First Grade teacher. She comes to us from her previous teaching post in North Carolina.

Tylar Harrod – [bottom row, far left] Mrs. Harrod joins our Elementary School Faculty as a Fourth Grade teacher. We have three Fourth Grade classes this year; a strong indicator for the continued growth of our Middle School IB Programme.

Sarah Difazio – [bottom row, 2nd photo] Ms. Difazio joins us as a new Instructional Assistant for Fourth and Fifth Grades. Mrs. Jessica Funk remains our Instructional Assistant for Second and Third Grades.

Paul Daley – [bottom row, 3rd photo] Mr. Daley joins our Middle School Faculty as a History Teacher. He previously worked at St. Bridget’s as a Middle School Math Teacher and is excited to focus on his area of study.

Elana Patrizia – [bottom row, far right] Mrs. Patrizia is a new Math & Science Teacher in our Middle School. She joins us from Richmond Public Schools.

Faithful Citizenship Resources In anticipation of Election Day on November 5, the Virginia Catholic Conference has prepared voter education resources to help Catholics confidently vote with an informed conscience. Those resources can be found on the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's website . School Day Reminders This year, Election Day is a regular school day with a regular bell schedule at Saint Mary's Catholic School. In prior years, it has coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences resulting in a day-off for students; however, that is not the case this school year. Many of our students across all grade levels are aware of the importance of Election Day. We anticipate the days leading up to Election Day and those following it will provide topics of conversation that students may choose to engage in both inside and outside the classroom. If necessary, our teachers may offer age-appropriate explanations of the day's events and results. As family members, we encourage you to guide your children as they navigate their thoughts and feelings over the coming weeks and months.
