FAITH IN ACTION: G8 COMMUNITY PROJECTS

Katie Botha • March 20, 2025

Suds for Good, Social Media Awareness, CARITAS Collection + More!

Our 8th grade students are busy with IB Capstone projects that positively impact our community and our world! If you are looking to put your own faith into action this Lenten Season, please consider supporting one or more of the initiatives below.

Community Car Wash - Happening Friday, March 28th from 3:30 until 5pm in the front parking lot of the school. Proceeds will benefit a local charity.

Stopping the Scroll  - Two students presented to their Middle School peers on the mental health risks of social media and how to stay safe when using various platforms. You can learn more about state legislation set to take effect on 1/1/26 and discuss the topic with your own kids. Communication is key to keeping our kids safe and healthy!

CARITAS Collection - From April 7th to April 15th, a group of students will be collecting dry goods like rice and crackers as well as canned goods ranging from soup to beans, pasta with and without sauce, baby food, and baby formula for newborns.

Volleyball for Good - Several sporty 8th graders are busy recruiting staff and students to participate in a benefit match on the evening of Tuesday, April 8th to help raise funds for 30 new long sleeve Volleyball jerseys. Cost to play or attend will be $5; additional donations enthusiastically accepted. All proceeds will be used toward their $1,200 project goal.

Faithful Citizenship Resources In anticipation of Election Day on November 5, the Virginia Catholic Conference has prepared voter education resources to help Catholics confidently vote with an informed conscience. Those resources can be found on the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's website . School Day Reminders This year, Election Day is a regular school day with a regular bell schedule at Saint Mary's Catholic School. In prior years, it has coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences resulting in a day-off for students; however, that is not the case this school year. Many of our students across all grade levels are aware of the importance of Election Day. We anticipate the days leading up to Election Day and those following it will provide topics of conversation that students may choose to engage in both inside and outside the classroom. If necessary, our teachers may offer age-appropriate explanations of the day's events and results. As family members, we encourage you to guide your children as they navigate their thoughts and feelings over the coming weeks and months.
