A Reflection from Mrs. Esparza

Dear Monarch Families,

As we take time to reflect on the Lenten season we must remember the beauty that it brings with the promise of Easter.

At the heart of our Catholic faith are many traditions throughout the different liturgical seasons. At St. Mary’s Catholic School, we have many long standing traditions and began many new traditions this Lenten season to truly prepare our hearts, minds, and souls for the Resurrection of our Lord.

From celebrating the 25th anniversary of Shadow Stations of the Cross after breaking bread with friends and neighbors at our annual pasta dinner to outdoor Walking Stations of the Cross and a Lenten retreat for students with exposition of the blessed sacrament, we have reflected upon our relationship with Jesus and taken the opportunity to grow closer to Him.

Our hope for each and every student and their family is that they may grow deeper in the relationship with Jesus through the activities, teachings, and experiences we offer at St. Mary’s.

Easter also marks the beginning of a well deserved break for our faculty, staff and students. In the final weeks leading up to Holy Week, some of our students took World Language exams and Faith-based assessments to help us benchmark student performance in these areas and compare them with national averages.

I am pleased to report that our students are thriving as much academically as they are in the celebration of their faith and spiritual growth.

As we return to school after Easter Break, we will again seek the Lord’s guidance as we prepare to send our 8th graders off to high school! Approximately 50% of our graduates will continue to pursue a Catholic education at Benedictine, St. Gertrude and Blessed Sacrament. The remaining 50% of students have been accepted into several highly selective Specialty Center programs and private schools while others have opted to attend their zoned public schools.

I know you join me in praying for all of our students' continued success in every aspect of their lives!

Blessings,

Mrs. Amanda Esparza

Principal

Faithful Citizenship Resources In anticipation of Election Day on November 5, the Virginia Catholic Conference has prepared voter education resources to help Catholics confidently vote with an informed conscience. Those resources can be found on the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's website . School Day Reminders This year, Election Day is a regular school day with a regular bell schedule at Saint Mary's Catholic School. In prior years, it has coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences resulting in a day-off for students; however, that is not the case this school year. Many of our students across all grade levels are aware of the importance of Election Day. We anticipate the days leading up to Election Day and those following it will provide topics of conversation that students may choose to engage in both inside and outside the classroom. If necessary, our teachers may offer age-appropriate explanations of the day's events and results. As family members, we encourage you to guide your children as they navigate their thoughts and feelings over the coming weeks and months.
