Rocket Club Update

Katie Botha • April 8, 2022

The following is a report submitted by SMCS Te chnology Teacher and Rocket Club Sponsor, Mr. Tlusty.

Our rocket team, The Stellar Stars , participated in the The American Rocketry Challenge which is the world’s largest rocket contest with nearly 5,000 students nationwide competing each year. This year’s challenge was to design and build a rocket that would carry two raw eggs to an altitude of 835 feet and return the eggs safely back to earth undamaged. The flight duration has to be between 41 and 44 seconds.

Our best qualification flight went 846 feet high and flight duration was 34 seconds.  Pretty good, but it will not get us into the finals. The past several weeks we were testing along side two teams from Powhatan High School and launched qualification flights with Collegiate School’s High School rocket team this past Saturday.

Powhatan HS had one rocket qualify a bit better than ours (difference of 9 points). Our student’s rockets out shined the rest! All of our test and qualification flights took place at Tucker Park in Goochland. We thank them for allowing us the use of the park. Thanks also to our parents for their time and support.

Stellar Stars Team members include Alexa B., Sophia D., Stella G., Bailey L., Liam M., Lourdes O. and Bella S.

Can you pick out the Saint Mary’s alum who is on the Collegiate team below?

Faithful Citizenship Resources In anticipation of Election Day on November 5, the Virginia Catholic Conference has prepared voter education resources to help Catholics confidently vote with an informed conscience. Those resources can be found on the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's website . School Day Reminders This year, Election Day is a regular school day with a regular bell schedule at Saint Mary's Catholic School. In prior years, it has coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences resulting in a day-off for students; however, that is not the case this school year. Many of our students across all grade levels are aware of the importance of Election Day. We anticipate the days leading up to Election Day and those following it will provide topics of conversation that students may choose to engage in both inside and outside the classroom. If necessary, our teachers may offer age-appropriate explanations of the day's events and results. As family members, we encourage you to guide your children as they navigate their thoughts and feelings over the coming weeks and months.
