Art Teacher, Mrs. Dunham, worked with students in 3-T to create these vibrant works of modern art inspired by American artist Alma Thomas. In addition to being known for her use of color dabs, Thomas was an artist who achieved many firsts in the art world after a long career as an Art Teacher in Washington DC. She was the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art , and she exhibited her paintings at the White House three times. For these reasons Thomas is considered an important role model for women, African Americans, and older artists. And we love our budding artists’ use of her Expressionist paint style!
You can learn more about Alma Thomas on the National Museum of Women in the Arts website.
