With God’s Love as Guiderails, Our Lenten Journey Begins with Love

Katie Botha • February 18, 2021

With Monday’s observance of President’s Day, together we embarked on another short school week made even shorter by icy weather!

On Tuesday we loved seeing everyone’s belated celebration of Valentine’s Day with students and staff showcasing their spirit with pink and red clothing and accessories. We featured a love song in Spanish by ECDC students as well as some familiar faculty faces on social media. We also love this video below of fifth grade recess fun provided by Mrs. Benton!

Speaking of fun, Tuesday was also Mardi Gras, so Middle School learners in Mrs. Healy’s French class flipped the traditional script on masquerade ball masks to create bedazzled face masks in light of COVID-19’s impact on celebrations in New Orleans and elsewhere around the world. Elementary students were in on the Mardi Gras creativity too with some guidance from Madame Lee in World Language studies.

On Wednesday, the first day of Lent, we celebrated Ash Wednesday with a school mass for fifth through eighth grades. After mass, first through fourth grades also received ashes on their foreheads as did our JK and Kindergarten students thanks to a quick visit to ECDC by Mrs. Heishman.

In a school year marked by so many changes and uncertainty, we remain grateful to embark on this year’s Lenten journey together with God’s love as our guiderails!

Faithful Citizenship Resources In anticipation of Election Day on November 5, the Virginia Catholic Conference has prepared voter education resources to help Catholics confidently vote with an informed conscience. Those resources can be found on the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's website . School Day Reminders This year, Election Day is a regular school day with a regular bell schedule at Saint Mary's Catholic School. In prior years, it has coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences resulting in a day-off for students; however, that is not the case this school year. Many of our students across all grade levels are aware of the importance of Election Day. We anticipate the days leading up to Election Day and those following it will provide topics of conversation that students may choose to engage in both inside and outside the classroom. If necessary, our teachers may offer age-appropriate explanations of the day's events and results. As family members, we encourage you to guide your children as they navigate their thoughts and feelings over the coming weeks and months.
