Summer Update No. 2 from Mrs. Esparza

Katie Botha • July 11, 2024

Take note of all that's new at St. Mary's Catholic School!

A few wonderful weeks have elapsed since my first Summer Update.

Faculty Additions & Updates

We are thrilled to welcome additional Faculty members to our already incredible team of educators.

Mr. Travis McFaden joins our Middle School Faculty as our new History Teacher. He is a recent graduate of Christendom College and credits his grandfather, a retired AP History and Latin teacher, as his inspiration for pursuing a career in teaching. Travis is especially eager to become a part of the IB Middle Years team after spending a semester abroad in Rome, Italy where he studied Moral Theology, Medieval Philosophy, Art History and Architecture.

Mrs. Karen George is returning to St. Mary's as a Third Grade Teacher. Karen has served in this role previously both in Public Schools and at St. Mary's. She also served as a longterm Second Grade substitute at SMCS last school year, so she is very familiar with both our rising Third Grade students and the curriculum. Welcome back, Karen!

In other Faculty news, Mrs. Denise Reardon has accepted the role of Religion & New Teacher Mentor Coordinator. We know her focus on these areas will be a fantastic way to share her deep knowledge and love of our school.

Finally, we are still accepting applications for our Middle School Science Teacher, Instructional Assistant, and After School Care Assistant positions. Please reach out if you have a candidate you would like to share with us. Recommendations from our community often lead to great hires!

Popsicles on the Playground, 7/24

I cannot promise cooler weather, but I can promise you a cool treat and some socializing on the playground at the conclusion of Vacation Bible School on Wednesday, July 24th from noon until around 1pm. Bring your kids and your questions about the coming school year. This is an optional event open to all returning and new families with students of all ages!

New Parent Cocktail, 8/8 (RSVP by 8/1)

Hosted by our PTO, new parents are invited to join us from 6:30 until 8pm on Thursday, August 8th in our School Gymnasium and Courtyard.

New Lunch Options

Mrs. Patricia Osborne, our awesome Lunch Coordinator, is working to make adjustments to our salad options and the addition of Quesadilla Thursdays! More details to follow.

New Website Coming Soon

We have partnered with LPi, the same company that produces our Weekend Mass bulletins. LPi also helped our Parish Church relaunch their website last year.

In addition to the sections and content you are familiar with, the refreshed site design also features a Spanish language option and is ADA compliant thanks to the installation of UserWay (the small blue circle icon in the upper righthand corner). This means it works with Screen Reader software, can display Dyslexia friendly content and much more.

We expect to officially launch the new site on or before August 1st.

Tips & Strategies from Mrs. Slagle

Faithful Citizenship Resources In anticipation of Election Day on November 5, the Virginia Catholic Conference has prepared voter education resources to help Catholics confidently vote with an informed conscience. Those resources can be found on the Catholic Diocese of Richmond's website . School Day Reminders This year, Election Day is a regular school day with a regular bell schedule at Saint Mary's Catholic School. In prior years, it has coincided with Parent-Teacher Conferences resulting in a day-off for students; however, that is not the case this school year. Many of our students across all grade levels are aware of the importance of Election Day. We anticipate the days leading up to Election Day and those following it will provide topics of conversation that students may choose to engage in both inside and outside the classroom. If necessary, our teachers may offer age-appropriate explanations of the day's events and results. As family members, we encourage you to guide your children as they navigate their thoughts and feelings over the coming weeks and months.
