The Pinchbeck Project

Middle School student tutoring our younger neighbors.

Our Middle School students walk across the field connecting our private school with Henrico County’s Pinchbeck Elementary School to tutor English learners, who make up about 16 percent of Pinchbeck’s student population.

Most ESL students at Pinchbeck were born in the U.S. but do not speak English at home, said ESL teacher Shannon Donovan. Most are Spanish or Arabic speakers.

Equipped with packets of reading and math activities and instructions put together by teachers that essentially teach the students how to teach.

This mutually beneficial relationship gives the middle-schoolers volunteer experience when most organizations favor older children and gives the ESL students one-on-one academic help.
