Saint Mary’s Catholic School
Spring Running Club & Track Programs
Q&A
March 3, 2014
What is the Running Club?
The Running Club is an activity that we started several years ago to encourage fitness and healthy living through running. This spring, it is open to all St. Mary’s students in the 4th – 8th grades. Practice will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays at the school from 3 – 4 p.m. The runners will meet outside at the playground at 3 p.m. for practice. We encourage broad participation regardless of skill level. Students are encouraged to attend both practices each week, but it is absolutely not a requirement. The coach of the running club is Donald Jean, who has led our fall Cross Country and spring Track activities for the past few years.
Who is eligible for the Running Club?
Saint Mary’s students in 4th – 8th grade ONLY. Students in grades K-3, who might have future interest, can join when they are in the appropriate grade.
What is the Track Program?
For the first time, we are offering St. Mary’s students an opportunity to participate in high school track and field practices with the Benedictine & St. Gertrude track teams. Practices will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Benedictine Abbey from approximately 3:45 – 5:15pm. Participating students need to be capable enough to complete high school level track practices. Unlike the Running Club, participation in both track practices each week is a requirement, although we understand that conflicts may arise on a one-off basis. Students who join the Track Program are strongly encouraged to participate in the Monday/Wednesday Running Club practices. Scott Schaefer, who is the head coach of the Benedictine & St. Gertrude track teams and a teacher at St. Mary’s, will coach the St. Mary’s Track Program students.
When does the season start and finish?
Running Club practice starts Monday, March 17th, and the Track Program starts the next day. The season will finish by Friday, May 16th. If you do not come to the first practice, you may join as soon as possible.
Will there be track meets?
Students in both groups will be eligible to participate in several somewhat informal spring track meets. Students in the Track Program may have the opportunity to compete in one or more higher caliber track meets during the season.
Will practice be canceled due to inclement weather?
Running club practice will take place rain or shine. Practice will take place in the gym when it is not appropriate to run outside. Track practice will most likely take place rain or shine as well.
What do students need for practice?
Appropriate running attire, shoes and a water bottle are required.
