An amazing educational opportunity for you and your student!
Please Note: Early Dismissal 12:20PM on Monday August 21, 2017
Dear Saint Mary’s Families,
As you are undoubtedly aware, Richmond will experience an eclipse of the sun on August 21st. It is reported to begin at 1:18 p.m., with the maximum effect at 2:44p.m. For Richmond, 86% of the sun will be obscured at this time. This eclipse will present a unique educational opportunity for us. Many of our children have never witnessed an eclipse, and many will be in their 90’s during the next anticipated eclipse in the year 2078. As a result, we are planning to use the event as a “teachable moment” with special activities the morning of the 21st.
In addition to providing an educational opportunity, the eclipse also presents several safety issues. News sources have reported the risk of eye damage or blindness if the eclipse is viewed without proper eye wear or filters. Dismissal in near total darkness results in a danger to our students and faculty. Therefore, we will dismiss at 12:20 p.m. our regular early dismissal time on our first day of school. We will offer after school care for the families who need it on that day. If your planning on your student attending after school care your ASC registration must be completed. For safety reasons students attending ASC will not be outside during the eclipse. It is our goal to make this special event one that the students will remember while remaining safe.
Thank you for your continued support and engagement,
Cheryl B. Henig
