Teachers are concerned about the weight of backpacks as students transport books and supplies between home and school. Many students are finding it easier to simply carry all of their books and supplies in their backpacks, rather than selectively carry what is needed. Parents are asked to help students with managing their backpacks and controlling the amount of weight carried by students.
The Wall Street Journal recently reported on a study of back pack weight that provides information relevant to the control of back pack weight. Please see this study for results and recommendations. The author of the article reports that “The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends backpacks weigh from 10% to 20% of children’s body weight. The American Occupational Therapy Association says packs shouldn’t exceed 10% of body weight.”
