On October 20, 2004 the U.S. Department of Education announced its 2004 Blue Ribbon School awards and St. Mary’s School was the only Richmond area school to receive the prestigious award this year. St. Mary’s was also the only private school to receive the award in the state of Virginia.

“This is a tremendous honor for the St. Mary’s community and it highlights what has been a long tradition of academic excellence at St. Mary’s,” explains principal Dr. Thomas D. Dertinger. “The accelerated curriculum, experienced teachers, and a caring community of students, faculty and parents are credited with creating the environment which allows the students to excel,” continued Dr. Dertinger.

“Our students are performing well not only academically on a national basis,” elaborates Dr. Dertinger, “but also they are having their needs for character and spiritual development met.” Dr. Dertinger confirmed the school’s commitment to educating the complete child, the cornerstone of a St. Mary’s education.

The awards ceremony was held November 4-5, 2004 in Washington, D.C. Two members of the St. Mary’s faculty were present to receive the award. U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige states on the department’s website, “Blue Ribbon recipients will be national models of excellence that others can learn from.”

St. Mary’s is the only parochial or private school in the Richmond area to receive the U.S. Department of Education’s Blue Ribbon award in 2004. According to the Department of Education’’s website, the Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior in their states or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement. Blue Ribbon Schools Program awards began in 1982 and the awards are now part of the No Child Left Behind education reform law.

St. Mary’s received this recognition by scoring in the top 10 per cent of private schools in the nation based on its 2003 standardized test sores. St. Mary’s uses the TerraNova Assessment Series, which are standardized tests published by CTB McGraw-Hill and widely used across the nation in both public and private schools. CTB is a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies and a leading publisher of standardized achievement tests for children and adults. It is the test publisher of choice for 23 state departments of education and is in use in thousands of school districts and dioceses across the country.
